Interesting Concept

I was listening to the Lincoln County Coach's Recap on WPBK last night. Very cool show, live from Applebees in Danville. Coach Settles made the point that he is building a "program" . I have heard many say this lately, and to be honest I never gave it a lot of thought. But it makes sense.

The past couple of years, the team was very good. But there was really no "program". No JV games, no freshman games, etc. The question is why? Why did the old coach, who had a very successful varsity team, not implement a strong program from the ground up? The middle school and little league program were never directly linked to the high school. It appears that is a top priority for Coach Settles and his staff, and I am a big believer in it. I think creating the culture of a prideful, winning program starts at an early age and I think Coach Settles (given time) will make it happen.

Now, the only thing is how come no one was bringing this up the past couple of years? Hum... probably because the team was WINNING. Why were they winning? One word, TALENT. The past couple of seasons, the team has had some great talent. Two D-1 players and some great senior leadership. To sustain that kind of success, you have to develop from the ground (little league) up (high school varsity team).

When I hear people talk about building a program it makes me excited to think about the future. I hope Settles will stay committed to that task and will be here for a long time. Let's all get behind him and let him know he has the support.

I was out at the high school Thurs. night, it was a great place to be for a football fan. There where at least 150 or more kids playing or practicing. There was the little league games going on, LCMS practice, LCHS practice, and it looked like some flag and little league practice. It was awesome. There was also Settles at the little league game after their practice encouraging the kids etc. A GREAT site to see for a LC fan. His focus it to build a program. Something we probably haven't had since the Phillps' era.

it will be good to build a program from the ground up, i thought though that when Coach French was here he did try to atleast the system into the middle school and couldn't get agreement. Don't get me wrong they did have alot of talent, but I dont think it would have been possible without his leadership, he is doing it across the county line now. But whats gone is gone and lets move on..i think you should give every coach 3 years to implement his system completely. A good example is just like Pitino or even Rich Brooks, it took them time starting at UK and then they finally got their mojo working.

Any coach would have won with the athletes Lincoln had when French was here, sorry.

have to disagree with you there whiteskill..but enough about him, we are past it, there is no sense in bashing a man that has had success at EVERY single program he was at. Thats like saying anyone could win coaching USC...maybe but his coaching influence had a great deal to do with it. or thats like saying anyone could have one with the basketball team we had..who knows. ITS OVER NOW...EVERYONE NEEDS TO GET OVER THEIR BITTERNESS..COACH SETTLES IS OUR MAN.

Not everyone can win at USC. They actually sucked pretty hard until Pete Carrol got there. They were irrelevant in the 90's.

^^^^Looks like somebody's trying to start trouble...I'm going to take the advice and not touch this because we all know that's not the facts.

I know for a fact that French made an appearance and tried implementing strategies in the little league programs. To say the strategies were carried out, I can't say, but at least he made an effort and held coaches meeting. I hope Settles continues to be a part of the "program" from the little league up. But whoever made the suggestive comment that French was coaching on talent alone, doesn't know what they are talkin about. I think you've got to credit French for building this program. However, he saw a drop in the talent pool for the next couple of years and realized Boyle had some talent and that it might be his only chance at the state ring. He is an older coach and the coaching years are limited. Lincoln should have known from the get go that French wanted a ring and not the love for the school. If French saw that the ring was not happening, then "see ya later". I think the program will improve if Coach Settles and administration stay committed.
